The Story Behind WASPS

In 2019, Life Member Kay Lee very kindly commissioned world-renowned sports journalist, broadcaster and hockey commentator Ashley Morrison to compile the history of WASPs HC.

Over the course of 2019/2020, Ashley undertook the mammoth task of researching, interviewing members and compiling a great deal of information from the rich history of the Club, resulting in the production of the book Into the Nest. The Story Behind WASPs Hockey Club.

Some of the highlights of the project include:

• 75 individuals were interviewed for the book.
• The age range of those interviewed was 23-94 years.
• A total of 444 pages including photographs, with the book split into decades.
• The first memories come from those who played in the 1940’s.
• Old Wesley and South Perth failed to win a Premier Grand Final individually.
• After becoming WASPs in 1986 they won their first Premiership in 1990 and then went back-to-back.
• WASPs Men have won five Premier Grade Premierships.
• South Perth Women won two Premier Grade Premierships before joining WASPs.
• Since becoming a part of WASPs they have won two more, and like the men went back-to-back.
